Case study: Mowi

Whale-like-fish undertakes a variety of PR activity for the world’s biggest salmon farming company, Mowi.

The Scoop

We produce Mowi Scotland’s monthly newsletter, The Scoop, which is distributed among its employees in Scotland, as well as MSPs, MPs and local councillors, and trade press. Whale-like-fish works with the Mowi team to identify topics for each section of the newsletter before interviewing relevant Mowi representatives, industry experts or third-party suppliers.

We then draft content focussing on topics such as technology updates, product focus, fish health and community news, as well as ‘meet the team’ and ‘photo of the month’ sections. We then design the newsletter before distributing digitally.

Canada newsletters

In addition to a monthly newsletter in Scotland, we also develop newsletters for Mowi Canada East and Mowi Canada West approximately two to three times a year. These follow a similar format to The Scoop and each newsletter contains links to the others so colleagues can stay up to date with their counterparts around the world.

Mowi Connect

Whale-like-fish produces daily content for Mowi’s global Intranet, Mowi Connect. The team sources stories and updates from employees around the world and turns them into compelling articles which we post at least once a day.

We work with senior teams around the world to help them communicate with employees, ensuring they are engaged with everything that is happening at the company. We also work with Mowi colleagues around the world to develop themed weeks, such as an annual Global Safety Week and a week of content around International Women’s Day.

In addition to content, we also regularly update the look and functionality of the platform, ensuring content and resources are easily accessible and engaging for employees.

Annual report

Having a wide knowledge of Mowi’s operations around the world means we are also able to assist the internal global communications team by drafting stories for Mowi’s annual report.

Community engagement and media relations

Whale-like-fish provides community engagement and media relations services to the Mowi team.

For Mowi’s Feed Mill in Kyleakin, we have been involved in the organisation of an emergency services day and a number of community events to address concerns neighbours had with the impact of the new Feed Mill. All events and updates from the Mill were communicated to local media, ensuring conversations are open and showing that the team is proactive in finding solutions to any concerns raised by neighbours. We also provide regular communications directly to neighbours detailing the latest updates.

We also created a sales brochure and a webpage on the Mowi website for Mowi Feed, which the team uses in discussions with clients and potential clients.

Whale-like-fish is always on hand to assist the internal Mowi Scotland communications team with any news releases or responding to media enquiries.

One initiative Whale-like-fish kicked off was a fundraising campaign for Lochalsh Leisure Centre on behalf of Mowi, encouraging local businesses and residents to get behind a campaign to raise £85,000 for building upgrades.

Awards

Whale-like-fish has drafted a number of award applications for Mowi Scotland. Using our knowledge of its operations and initiatives within communities or by interviewing relevant team members, we are able to draft compelling applications and create supporting evidence documents. These entries have resulted in many award wins for Mowi Scotland.
