Proud to represent the key sectors of the Highland economy

Five years since establishing Whale-like-fish, we are proud that we continue to represent businesses and organisations that provide sustainable employment, showcase the very best the Highlands has to offer, and encourage visitors to come and experience that world famous Highland welcome.

Aquaculture

Salmon farming employs 2,300 people in Scotland, around 1,500 of whom live in remote areas where they form the mainstays of local communities. The sector also supports local supply chains, with around 10,000 jobs including boat builders, feed suppliers and hauliers being reliant on the sector to provide them with a living.*

Salmon is also the biggest food export from Scotland, worth around £578 million a year and exported to 54 countries.

Whale-like-fish has been fortunate to work with Mowi since day one. Producing daily articles for Mowi’s global intranet and copywriting, designing and distributing the monthly newsletter for Mowi Scotland, we see first-hand the impact that Mowi has in the rural Highlands.

We were delighted therefore to be asked to help Mowi Scotland communicate the work undertaken by the business to support and improve the communities in which it operates.

Food and drink

As well as representing Scotland’s biggest food export and supporting with the launch of a brand new ready-to-cook range MOWI Bistro Bakes in 2023, we were thrilled to indulge our sweet tooth last year with the inaugural Highland Shortbread Showdown.

Organised by Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO) Visit Inverness Loch Ness (VILN), bakers from across the Highlands took part in the ultimate bake off in the quest to find the best biscuit.

Tourism

Promoting the Highlands as a food and drink destination is one element of the marketing strategy used by Visit Inverness Loch Ness to attract visitors to the area. Increasingly, the Highlands is also a hot spot for sports tourism, boasting flagship events such as the Inverness Half Marathon, Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running, and Etape Loch Ness.

Whale-like-fish has provided media relations, social media and event day support for each of these events.

Construction

Whale-like-fish is proud to work for the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA), a trade body that represents plant owners in Scotland. This has given us the opportunity to generate national media coverage of good news stories such as the UK’s youngest digger and dumper drivers – Jamie and Jay Currie from Cullen.

We have also been able to successfully use PR to inform, educate and campaign on issues that affect the plant industry, such as the removal of rebate on red diesel and our recent campaign to raise awareness of the theft of fuel, plant, machinery and tools, in conjunction with Police Scotland.
